My belly dance journey began some 9 years ago, when I was at a crossroads in life. My first aim was get to fit but I wanted to have fun whilst doing it – a gym wasn’t for me. I loved to dance, so why not combine the two?
Having travelled through Egypt, Turkey and the Middle East many times years ago, I used to see the belly dancers at various places and was mesmerised by their fluid dance moves - I loved to watch them but It never occurred to me back then to learn to belly dance.
It wasn’t until many years later when living in Auckland and at a bit of a loose end in life, that I decided to join a belly dance class and that was it! I was hooked! With the class, I worked towards to my first show and loved the camaraderie with the girls, the thrill of getting my first costume ready for our performance and the excitement of performing for the first time in front of an audience.
That first performance was over nine years ago and I haven’t looked back. I have since performed at many shows/events/functions etc, both solo and with groups, loving every minute of it.
I have studied over the years, and continue to do so, with wonderful teachers from New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Egypt, Turkey, Russia, Portugal, Canada and the USA - local teachers and international ones. All have helped me on my belly dance journey, teaching me new skills, techniques, styles, choreographies, keeping me enthralled in the dance.
Having taught workshops in the past, last year I began teaching classes, as it felt like the natural progression for me to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained throughout the years and bring the joy of the dance to others. It’s wonderful to see students that I’ve taught, perform in their first show, taking their first steps on their own dance journey.
Belly dance is a way of life for me and is ingrained in my very being.
I continue to love performing, the joy of entertaining people, the buzz of the event. And I continue to learn and be captivated by the many facets this dance has - the different branches that have evolved from it and the wonder that is belly dance...
